How Chris prices the coins you sell

Every coin gets two looks. First comes melt: the weight on a state-inspected scale, the metal content from the XRF reader, and today's live spot price. Then comes collector value, which depends on date, mint mark, grade and current dealer demand. Chris tells you which number governs each coin, and why.

One circulated Morgan dollar with a common date at today’s spot price

26.73 grams × 90% silver = 0.7734 troy oz × spot $59.08 = $45.70 in metal

Melt value only. Collector value, when a coin has it, is priced separately and shown to you at the table.

What moves the price of a coin

  • Silver and gold spot prices change during the day, and metal-based offers move with them.
  • A scarce date or mint mark can lift a coin well past its metal value.
  • Grade counts: a sharp, unworn coin can be worth far more than the same date worn smooth.
  • Cleaned, polished or damaged coins grade lower and sell for less to collectors.
  • Certified coins in PCGS or NGC slabs are priced by the grade on the holder.

Where to sell coins in Dallas

Ask around Dallas about selling coins and you will hear a dozen answers. A neighbor in Lakewood swears by a pawn shop on Garland Road. A cousin in Oak Cliff shipped a box to a mail-in buyer. Someone at church saw a hotel buying event advertised near the Galleria. Each path works differently, and the difference shows up in your offer.

Pawn shops lend money first and buy second. Most counter staff are not trained to spot a scarce mint mark, so coins often get priced as plain silver. Mail-in buyers keep you out of the room while your coins are judged. Hotel events rent a ballroom for a few days and leave, which makes follow-up questions hard. Online marketplaces can reach collectors, but you handle the photos, the shipping, the fees and the returns.

A coin dealer works with collectors every week, so dates, grades and mint marks are part of the job. With Chris, you sit across the table from the person making the offer. Nothing goes to a back room. You can ask why two silver dollars that look alike draw different numbers, and get a straight answer while the coins sit in front of you.

Before you go anywhere, do a little sorting at home. Keep coins in the holders, rolls or albums they came in. Do not wipe, polish or dip anything, since cleaning lowers a coin's grade. Look up the silver spot price that morning so the melt numbers make sense. Make a rough note of what you have: silver dollars, pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves, gold coins, proof sets or old bills.

Sellers come from all over Dallas: Highland Park families clearing out a parent's study, retirees in North Dallas near Prestonwood, collectors from Kessler Park and the Bishop Arts District. Appointments run Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and directions come when you book. For a large estate or a heavy collection inside Dallas County, Chris can come to the house instead.

Bring a driver's license or state ID, the coins, and any paperwork such as old receipts or a parent's handwritten inventory. Call 469-599-3283 and Chris will call you back the same business day to set a time.

Common questions

Where is the best place to sell coins in Dallas?

Look for a buyer who checks each coin for collector value before falling back on melt, and who does it in front of you. A coin dealer who buys and sells to collectors knows what a scarce date or a high grade is worth, which a pawn counter often does not.

Will you pay more than melt value for my coins?

When a coin has collector value, the offer reflects it. Many common circulated coins trade near their metal value, and Chris will tell you plainly which group each of your coins falls into.

What kinds of coins do you buy?

Silver dollars, pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves, gold coins, PCGS and NGC graded coins, proof and mint sets, world coins, bullion and old U.S. paper money. Whole collections and single coins are both welcome.

Do I need to bring ID to sell coins?

Yes. Texas law requires a coin buyer to record the seller's photo ID, so bring a current driver's license or state ID card.

How do I get paid?

You are paid the same visit by cash or check. Larger sales can be paid by wire.

Can I get an offer and think it over?

Yes. The appraisal is free and the offer is in writing. Take your coins and the list home, sleep on it, and call back if you decide to sell.
