From the old square to Koreatown
Carrollton keeps one foot in its farm town past. The square in Old Downtown Carrollton, with the DART Green Line stopping beside it, still has the feel of a place where farmers came to town to settle up after harvest. Some families from those days are still here, and their coins are older than most of the houses. The old A. W. Perry homestead and the brick buildings on the square still hint at how small the town once was.
Those old estates bring silver dollars, Barber dimes and the occasional U.S. gold piece. Gold coins were struck for circulation until 1933, and many carry collector value beyond their metal. Chris checks each one for date, mint mark and grade, since a worn common coin and a sharp better date can look alike to an untrained eye.
Carrollton grew fast in the 1970s and 1980s, with subdivisions spreading along Josey Lane, Trinity Mills Road and Frankford Road. Those families raised kids at Newman Smith, R.L. Turner and Creekview, and saved coins the way suburban families did: proof sets, Silver Eagles and a sock of Kennedy halves in the closet. Some of those Kennedy halves are the 1964 coins that are 90% silver.
Today Carrollton has one of the largest Korean communities in North Texas, with markets, bakeries and restaurants clustered off Trinity Mills Road. Korean families sometimes keep gold bars and coins as household savings, along with won coins from home. Chris buys world coins and bullion and checks each piece with the XRF reader so the metal content is clear on screen. If a bar carries a stamp Chris has not seen before, the XRF reading settles what it is made of.
The city spans three counties. Chris visits homes in the Dallas County part of Carrollton for larger estates and collections, and anyone in town can book a weekday appointment with him in Dallas. Indian Creek, Rosemeade and the neighborhoods around Josey Ranch all send sellers his way.
Whichever way you come, bring a driver's license or state ID and leave the coins uncleaned. Call 469-599-3283 between 9am and 5pm to set a time. If Chris is with a seller, he calls back the same business day. Chris also writes item-by-item appraisals for Dallas County probate when a Carrollton estate needs one.
