Gold Coin Dealer in Dallas

Pre-1933 U.S. gold is collector money first and metal second, so Chris reads the date, mint mark and grade before any coin goes on a scale. Bring Liberty and Indian Head gold, American Eagles, Buffalos, Maple Leafs or Krugerrands to a private Dallas appointment and see every number on screen.

How a gold coin gets priced

Every gold coin has a floor: the gold it contains times today's live spot price. Older U.S. gold often sits above that floor because collectors want the date, the mint mark or the grade. Chris works out both figures in front of you, and the written offer follows the higher of the two.

A one ounce American Gold Eagle at today’s spot price

33.93 grams × 91.67% gold = 1.0000 troy oz × spot $4,123.21 = $4,123.23 in metal

Melt value only. Collector value, when a coin has it, is priced separately and shown to you at the table.

What moves a gold coin's value

  • Date and mint mark carry the most weight on pre-1933 coins, and a CC or O mint mark often draws extra collector interest.
  • Grade and eye appeal: original luster and clean surfaces bring more than worn or scratched coins.
  • Polishing, cleaning, jewelry mounts and solder marks pull a coin back toward its gold content.
  • Modern bullion coins like Eagles, Buffalos, Maple Leafs and Krugerrands follow the live spot price closely.
  • A PCGS or NGC holder can add buyer confidence on a scarce date, since the grade is already settled.

Gold coins in Dallas families

A lot of the gold coins Chris sees in Dallas were put away decades ago. The usual story is a grandfather who bought a few double eagles after a good year, or a mother who kept a small stack of quarter eagles in a safe deposit box at a bank on Preston Road. Those coins come out of desk drawers in University Park and lockboxes in Lake Highlands when a family starts settling an estate.

U.S. gold coins were struck for circulation until 1933. The four common sizes are the quarter eagle ($2.50), the half eagle ($5), the eagle ($10) and the double eagle ($20). Liberty head designs run through all four sizes, and Indian Head designs appear on the later quarter eagles, half eagles and eagles. Two coins with the same face value and the same gold can sit far apart once the date and mint mark are read, which is why Chris never treats old gold as bullion on sight.

Modern gold is simpler. The American Gold Eagle, made since 1986, is 22K gold, and the one ounce coin weighs 33.93 grams. Gold Buffalos and Canadian Maple Leafs are 24K. South African Krugerrands are 22K like the Eagle. These coins trade on their gold, so the offer moves with the live spot price on the day you visit.

Sellers in Dallas sometimes take gold coins to a pawn counter on Northwest Highway or a hotel buying event near LBJ Freeway and get a figure based on weight alone. That is fine for a Krugerrand. It can cost you real money on an older coin with a better date. Ask any buyer to name the date, mint mark and grade of each coin before the talk turns to weight.

Handle gold coins by the edges and leave them as they are. Do not polish a coin so it looks nicer for the visit. Cleaning lowers the grade, and the fine hairlines it leaves show right away under a loupe. If the coins came in original Mint boxes or plastic capsules, bring those along too.

Chris meets sellers one-on-one by appointment, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and gives directions when you book. For a larger estate in Dallas County he can come to the house, whether that is a ranch home near White Rock Lake or a high-rise along Turtle Creek. Bring a driver's license or state ID, which Texas law requires him to record.

Common questions

Are old U.S. gold coins worth more than their gold?

Many are. A pre-1933 coin with a better date, a scarce mint mark or a high grade can sell above its gold content. Common dates in worn grades usually trade close to melt, and Chris will tell you which group your coins fall into.

What is the difference between 22K and 24K gold coins?

22K coins like the American Gold Eagle and the Krugerrand are about 91.67% gold, with a little alloy added for hardness. 24K coins like the Gold Buffalo and the Maple Leaf are nearly pure. Both are priced on the gold they actually hold.

Should I get my gold coins graded before I sell?

Not always. Grading costs money and takes weeks, and it only pays off where the grade changes the value a lot. At the free appraisal Chris can tell you whether a coin is worth sending to PCGS or NGC.

Do you buy gold coins that were made into jewelry?

Yes. A coin that was set in a bezel or soldered to a chain has lost most of its collector appeal, so it is usually priced on its gold content.

Do you also sell gold coins?

Ask Chris what certified gold coins or bullion he has available. He gives honest advice and never pushes a purchase.

How fast can I get paid for gold coins?

The same visit. Accept the written offer and take cash or a check, or set up a wire for a larger sale.
