Rodeo town coins and railroad roots
Mesquite started as a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1873 and grew into the rodeo town that still fills the arena on summer nights. Ranching and railroad families put down the first roots here, and some of their silver dollars are still in the family. The town has kept a lot of that small-town feel even as it grew around Interstate 30 and LBJ Freeway.
Silver dollars were the money of that world. A rancher might be paid in them, keep a few after a good sale, or give one to each grandchild at Christmas. Morgan dollars were struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, and Peace dollars from 1921 to 1935, both 90% silver. In Mesquite they show up in leather pouches and dresser drawers.
Chris looks for the mint mark on every one. On a Morgan it sits on the reverse below the wreath, and a CC from Carson City usually draws more collector interest than a common date. Grade and eye appeal matter just as much, so he checks those with you too. If a dollar has been cleaned at some point, he will tell you how that changes its price.
Post-war Mesquite filled with ranch homes for families who worked at Big Town, Town East Mall and the plants around the city. Those households saved differently, in jars of dimes and in proof sets bought each year. A lot of that change is 90% silver if it is dated before 1965. Families from those years also kept Kennedy halves, and the ones dated 1965 to 1970 hold 40% silver.
Mesquite also has a strong military community, with veterans from every era living off Gus Thomasson Road and in the newer subdivisions to the east. War nickels from 1942 to 1945 hold 35% silver, and veterans often kept a few, along with coins from the places they served. Chris takes the time to hear where each of those coins came from.
Chris comes to homes across Mesquite for larger estates, from the older streets around the historic downtown to the neighborhoods by Horn High School. Call 469-599-3283, Monday through Friday. If he is with a seller, he calls back the same business day. Bring a driver's license or state ID and the coins as you found them.

Questions from Mesquite sellers
Where is the mint mark on a Morgan dollar?
It is on the reverse, just below the wreath. Chris checks it on every dollar at the appointment.
My grandfather ranched in Mesquite and left a pouch of silver dollars. Should I polish them?
No. Cleaning lowers a coin's grade and can cut what a collector will pay. Bring them in just as they are.
Does Chris visit Mesquite homes?
He does for larger estates and collections. Call 469-599-3283 on a weekday, and he will find a time that works for the family.
Are war nickels silver?
Yes. Wartime nickels from 1942 to 1945 hold 35% silver, and Chris sorts them from regular nickels at the appointment.
