How a whole collection gets priced

A collection is priced one coin at a time, then added up. Common silver goes by weight, purity and today's spot price. Coins with a better date, mint mark or grade are set aside and priced on collector demand. The written offer lists the groups, so you can see where the money is.

What shapes a collection offer

  • How much 90% silver sits in the albums, since pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves add up fast.
  • Whether the albums hold complete date runs or scattered common dates.
  • The condition of the coins, and whether anyone cleaned or polished them over the years.
  • Graded coins, proof sets and gold mixed into the boxes, which are priced on their own.
  • Unopened rolls, which Chris checks with you, since what is inside matters more than the wrapper.

Selling a coin collection in Dallas

Coin collections tend to arrive looking alike: a stack of coin albums and folders, a cigar box of loose silver, a few rolls with a bank's name still on the paper, and maybe a proof set or two from the 1960s. Some were built with care over decades. Others grew one pocket of change at a time. Either way, each one deserves a real sort.

Maybe a father filled folders from his change on the commute down Central Expressway. Maybe a grandmother in Mesquite saved every Kennedy half the bank teller handed her. Collections like these rarely come with a list, and the person who knew what was special about them is often no longer around to ask.

Chris sorts the whole thing at the table. Albums open flat so you can see every slot. Rolls get opened and checked, since a roll of dimes might hold silver ones mixed in with clad. Type sets are checked slot by slot, because one better coin can carry a page. World coins, tokens and medals get pulled into their own pile. Nothing gets priced by the pound without a look.

When the sort is done, you get one written offer for everything, broken into groups: silver by weight, collector coins one by one, graded pieces by holder. If you want to keep the album your grandfather started, or the Peace dollars you always liked, pull them out. Chris is glad to buy all or part.

Before you call, take a quick count. How many albums and folders? Any full bank rolls? Any slabbed coins or government proof sets? Those answers help Chris decide whether the collection fits a desk appointment or calls for a home visit, which he offers for bigger collections in Dallas County.

Collectors and families come from Carrollton near Josey Lane, from Lakewood near White Rock Lake, and from the Town East area of Mesquite. Appointments run weekdays from 9am to 5pm. Bring a driver's license or state ID, and call 469-599-3283 to get on the calendar.

Common questions

Will you buy my whole coin collection?

Yes, and you can also sell only part of it. One written offer covers everything, and you decide what stays and what goes.

Are the coins in my albums and folders worth anything?

Often, yes. Pre-1965 silver adds up by weight, and a few better dates or high-grade coins can carry a page. Chris checks every slot so nothing is missed.

Should I take coins out of the albums before I come?

No. Leave them where they are. The album order helps the sort, and handling coins can leave fingerprints on them.

What about unopened bank rolls?

Bring them wrapped. Chris opens and checks them with you, since the contents matter more than the label.

Do you price a collection by the pound?

No. Every coin gets looked at. Common silver is priced by weight and purity, but anything with collector value is priced on its own.

Can you come to my house to see a large collection?

For larger collections in Dallas County, yes. Describe the size when you call and Chris will set up a home visit.
